Luchnos and its culture
Religion
Long ago, many of the Luchnians embraced Christianity -- but on their own terms. The authorities on the mainland never tire of denouncing them as heretics, but perhaps living on a rather remote island has its advantages, since things there continue on more or less as they have for centuries. The official church is scandalized by the important roles women play in the Luchnian Christian community, by the highly irregular doctrines to which they stubbornly hold, and by the rumors of Pagan observances maintained without interruption on the island since ancient times.
Indeed, it is only owing to the close-knit nature of the island's people, who regard one another as a very large family, that those of them who have never adopted the Christian faith have managed to survive to this day, protected by their sister and brother Luchnians. The rites they have never entirely forgotten to celebrate are joyful occasions for the gathering of many who also count themselves among the followers of Jesus, or members of one of the variety of other small faith communities who have found a home here. For the Luchnians are all proud of their ancestors, who arrived here from many directions, and they do not doubt that the success of their way of life owes much to the respect and reverence they have always paid to the spirits of this beautiful and beloved land: its hills and springs, forests, and small but fertile fields, which bear fruit in rhythm with the changing tides of the Sun, Moon, and Stars.
Visitors who become acquainted with the people of Luchnos may find themselves astonished at the harmony that reigns here among the faiths, while religious wars rage in the world surrounding them. But the Luchnians have long realized that intolerance and persecution are luxuries they cannot afford if they wish their cherished way of life to survive within the small boundaries of their island. They are well aware of the strife that prevails and has caused so much suffering in other lands. By now they've developed a fierce devotion to their unique way, since the great advantages of the civic peace that's the fruit of acceptance are obvious to them, so that they take pains to inculcate awareness of this in the young people of each new generation.
