Books that change everything!
These
few books
are some of the most crucial I've discovered during my years of
studies.
I'd like to give out copies to everyone, but since that's not
possible,
I'll just urge you all to run out and read them, and transform your consciousness!
Walter Wink's
Engaging the Powers:
Discernment and Resistance in
a World
of Domination.
This landmark work, recognized as his masterpiece,
was written when
Wink was more Christian than he is now
(he is a Quaker these days, whose theology is very Unitarian).
It's a tour de force that shows the interrelation of spiritual,
psychological, social & political oppression and liberation
as little else
has done, drawing on the thought of
Carl Jung, Riane Eisler, and René Girard,
among others.
No one can easily dismiss his analysis
of the "Domination System" that has
developed over the centuries,
how its methods of control operate within us
as
well as in the world,
and how they can be challenged.

Tom Driver's
The Magic
of Ritual:
Our
Need for Liberating Rites That Transform
Our Lives and Our Communities
(2nd edition entitled: Liberating Rites:
Understanding the Transformative Power of Ritual)
How
amazing to find such radical ideas about magic and social change from an emeritus professor
of Union Theological Seminary in New York (though if you look into the history of that school,
it may not be so surprising).
He
has traveled the world learning from shamans,
activists, vodou priestesses,
theater folk . . .
