Alternative Education & Empowerment

CASA of Maryland
CASA has grown and branched out over the years into an organization offering an impressive variety of programs supporting the Latino community in southern Montgomery County, MD.  I currently teach English in one of these programs.  This is unfortunately quite an old website (1996) with a lot of information that is very out of date.  Call or stop by to find out what we are doing now.

Highlander Center
Highlander, an organizing and education center, is famous as a catalyst for social change in the South, and for the way music from Highlander propelled the Civil Rights movement, and earlier, the labor movement.  Their founder, Myles Horton, was an important theorist and practitioner of Popular Education. They are now engaged in supporting Latino communities in their struggles with industries that depend on cheap undocumented labor.  Be sure to check out the links page here.

Institute for People's Education and Action
A network of groups sharing a  philosophy similar to Highlander's ~ Be sure to check out their bookshop!

Transformative Learning Centre (TLC):
This center in Toronto looks to be on the cutting edge of progressive Transformative Learning theory. They also offer: TLC Summer Classes

Empowerment Resources.com~ This set of webpages by a person in our local area offers an enormous variety of resources for personal, social, and ecological transformation.   It will take a while to figure out what's here.   Books are for sale, and connections are provided to many groups and projects.   Their vision and values seem to have a lot in common with ours.

Goddard College
I attended Goddard for much of the time from the summer of 1977 'til I left for Central America in '81. . . In 'my salad days, when I was green'. . . Wish I had done more with the opportunity, but I did learn a lot from being part of Goddard's unique learning community.  Much of it was far ahead of its time ~ I've seen ideas I heard about there emerge into the public consciousness decades later.

Please send us your suggestions for more links to Alternative Education projects and groups!
